Coronavirus - social distancing - Tips to manage anxiety

  • We want what we can’t have – fact!

We are wired to focus on what we talk and think about. So tip 1 is to think of better, nicer things!

  • Analyse what exactly is different.

On close analysis you may find that the answer is not a lot when compared to everything else you do. Once you know what is different you can investigate if you can do something to counteract it.

What is the need behind what you can no longer do?

How can you fill that need another way?

  • I’m lonely! Yes, especially if you live alone.

So are others; your friends, family and neighbours. Find different ways of making contact. Remember the telephone? It still works and there are many newer technology options available for 1:1 or group video calling as well as voice and text.

  • Walks, outside exercise and being outside are still options (just not in large groups and you may want to keep a bit more space between you and others).

  • Do something to support your local community (giving makes us feel good, but of course don’t risk yourself)

  • As before; limit exposure to the media – especially if it makes you anxious.

  • Re-connect with playing. If you have other people in the home with you then try and board game, get out a pack of cards – what did you used to play? There are also games that covert to being played online too!

  • If you own a computer gaming platform – like xbox or playstation then think about going online to play a game with others where you can interact in a virtual environment with other humans.

  • Take up a new hobby, maybe a craft. YouTube is a great resource to find out how to do something.

  • Clear out a drawer or room that you have been meaning to do.

  • Control your thoughts. When our thoughts ramp up on the ‘what if’ scenarios we increase our anxiety levels. This can be using something like distraction methods.

  • Our minds do not know the difference between what is real and what is imagined so consider an activity like guided meditation.

There are numerous ways to help you manage your anxiety. You will need to do some trial and error exploration of what works best for you.
